Próximo fim de semana, club day.

MG/LB

In fact it was the Christchurch Boys’ High School 1st XV that played and lost against Auckland Grammar School in 1920 when the Moascar Cup was last seen in the South Island.
ResponderEliminarFast forward 84 years and the holders of the Moascar Cup, a very strong Hasting Boys’ High School played CBHS in a National Top 4 match which doubled as a Moascar Cup Challenge. The subsequent 21 -14 win to CBHS was to begin a record run of 22 defences and the most successful era in the school’s proud rugby history. Remarkably three of these defences include National 1st XV title victories against Wesley College 2004, 19-19; Kings College, 2005, 23-10 and Auckland Grammar 2006, 18-14. A considerable number of the players representing the school during this period have progressed onto representative rugby at age group, provincial and national level. Players include: Tim Bateman, Nasi Manu, Colin Slade and Owen Franks (Crusaders & Canterbury NPC); Mark Jackman, Hugh Reed, Ash Dixon & Andrew Horell (Hawkes Bay NPC); Nicky Thomson New Zealand Sevens; Tim Bateman, Nasi Manu, Ash Dixon, Hugh Reed (New Zealand Schools); John Legg, Rodney Ah You, Ash Dixon, Nasi Manu, Tim Bateman, Hoani Matenga, Josh Townsend New Zealand Under 20.
Coaches during this time included Dave Ralston, Eddie Murphy, Richard Taylor, David Bone and Justin Fowler. Managers included Steve Fraser and trainer Scot Brown.
There is no one reason why CBHS was so successful during these golden years. A combination of outstanding individuals, excellent coaching, a very well structured player development programme, pride in playing for a school with over 125 years of history and wonderful parental and school support culture all combined to make the Moascar Cup rugby period one that Christchurch Boys’ High School can be truly proud of.
Now that South Island schools have had a sniff of the legendary cup in the last 5 years, let’s hope that either CBHS or that other proud Canterbury rugby school- St Bede’s can restore it to a mainland trophy cabinet as quickly as possible.
