Timaru

Vasco

  4. Christchurch Boys High School and St Bede’s College warmed up for their top of the table showdown in the Press Cup by recording strong victories against Timaru Boys High School and St Thomas of Canterbury College respectively. St Bede’s overpowered Timaru 45-0 scoring 7 tries in yet another demolition job! Tries for St Bede’s were scored by Fragoso-Mendes 2, F. Vieira-Almeida 2, M. Faletolu 2, and T Cossens. Hagen Schutle kicked four conversions and T. Cossens one. It’s the third time this season St Bede’s have kept an opponent scoreless.

Christchurch Boys High School didn’t have it as easy against St Thomas of Canterbury College but still won by the handsome margin of 39-14. Christchurch, who would have won by more had their goal kicking been accurate, scored seven tries in their 9th win of the season, T. Turner. 2, N. Hyde, A. Lienert-Brown, H. Nankivell, F. Smith and C. Wiremu were the scorers.

In the other Section one encounters Nelson College defeated Roncalli College 29-6 and St Andrew’s College inflected more pain on Christ’s College scoring a 37-10 win. The star for St Andrew’s was C. Tomilinson who scored a hat-trick while A. Dalzell and H. Roose-Clark also scored tries. R. Mo’unga had a great day fetching 17 points with a try, three conversions and two penalties.

  5. Despite heavy conditions Nelson College and Timaru Boys High School have produced an excellent game of running rugby on the rugby channel. Nelson outscored Timaru three tries to two, prevailing 28-18. Enjoying greater territory, Nelson leapt to a 21-6 halftime lead. Despite long periods of dominance in the second half Timaru were unable to overcome the deficit and ended up losing by 10 points allowing Nelson to climb to second on the Press Cup table after Christchurch Boys loss to St Bede’s. Nelson plays Christchurch on Thursday in Nelson in what in effect is a home semi final-rights playoff game. Timaru will be disappointed to lose having had 55% of possession. Individual standouts for Timaru were Number 8 Felise Gaogao and hooker and captain Aki Seiuli. For Nelson open-side, Steven Soper, fullback Jackson Harvey and halfback and captain Mitchell Drummond were especially good.
